Public Safety
The Residential Affairs Committee has worked with Bob Wood to alleviate the parking situation. With more parking spots sold this year than before, there needed to be a solution. We have created a remote parking pass, so students who don't use their cars often buy an inexpensive pass to park in lots that are further away and often vacant. This will free up many spots in the convenient parking lots on the residential side, and there will be no "A" "B" or "C" parking passes. There will just be two: Remote and Residential.
We have also worked closely with Bob Wood to get a share-ride program on campus. We decided on the company WE car. There will be two share cars on campus that students who pay a fee can use. This will also alleviate the parking situation in the crowded residential lots, and WE car will be hiring a student intern! This is one of our most exciting projects we have been working on, so look forward to more information!
We have also implemented parking meters on the residential side of campus and behind HamWil, because many students were getting 40-60 dollar tickets for parking in the fire lane for a small time period. The parking meters allow students to simply "run in" to Thompson Store, the mail room, or Stuy for a small fee, and the small fee goes right back into the Student Activity Fund to fund student initiatives, clubs, and events!
Our Plans for the Future: We hope to have a "lights walk" with Public Safety and Buildings and Grounds to assess the lighting on the residential side of campus. If there are any areas that prove to be "unsafe" due to lighting, we plan to address it. Also, we are working with Buildings and Grounds to change the timing of the out-door lighting to better fit the seasons. This will save money and energy.
We also hope to be in contact with Chief of Delaware Police to facilitate conversation between Public Safety and DPD about student safety and arrests.
